Plein Air Paintings of Point Lobos and Carmel, California

Cypress Point at Point Lobos, California - Oil Painting created "en plein air"
"The greatest meeting of land and water in the world." so said Francis McComas - well known landscape painter of
Point Lobos.
I paint in this magical reserve whenever I can. This original oil painting was painted "en plein air" on the Cypress Point trail at Point Lobos. It's a challenging spot with not much room for an artist to set up gear and leave room for visitors to get past as well. Afternoon light is the best time of day here.

Plein Air Painting done along 17 Mile Drive, Carmel, Ca.
January along the California Coast - and not just any ordinary part of the coast either - 17 Mile Drive in Carmel
Famous for the Pebble Beach Golf Links as well as the Spanish Bay and Cypress Golf Courses - all congregated on this heavenly stretch of coast.
In January we had a string of glorious days - sunny, warm and fog free. Perfect for a little landscape painting along 17 Mile Drive.
This wonderful spot is along the coast road near Shell Beach - a great spot to study the breaking waves in all their glory - white foam patterns in the surf line mingle with strands of kelp from the magic kelp forests just below the surface. Sea otters joyfully feasting on their backs - then diving down to avoid the churning sea.

The Story about This Plein Air Painting
Late Winter on the central coast of California is a glorious time. Poppies are in bloom, sunshine is everywhere and the Gray Whales are migrating back from their breeding grounds in Baja to their summer feeding grounds in Alaska.
This painting was done on such a day. While I was painting at Whalers Cove in the Point Lobos Preserve near Carmel, a pod of mother gray whales with their calves swam into the cove and spent some time resting and moving slowly in this protected environment. Resting before crossing the deep canyon of Monterey Bay on their way North. The gentle lapping of waves occasionally punctuated by the sounds of whales clearing their blowholes is what I remember when looking at this painting.
We must do all we can to protect and preserve these gentle giants.

Dolphin Cove, Pt. Lobos, Carmel, California

"Take a steep staircase of stone
To a magic hidden cove.
There, swirling emerald waves come ashore
After a journey of epic distance.
Fog descends on dark cypress trees
And lightly lifts again.
Later that morning, the dolphins appear.
The whole pod is at play
For that is their way.
Happy spirits all
I laugh
And Wish to be like them."

China Cove at Pt. Lobos, Carmel, California
High on the cliff trail above China Beach you get a bird’s eye view of the transparent emerald waters of the sea below.
Kelp appears as purple-brown ropes suspended in the crystalline water.
Well sheltered from the surging open ocean, this is a favored nursery spot for mother seals and their pups. They haul up on the white sand beach to rest and then play together in the sea caves.
The scent of sage and brine are carried on the gentle breeze.
The distant rocks are stained white by the myriad seabirds nesting there. Take the trail at the end of the road from the China Beach parking area at Pt. Lobos Reserve, hike up the stone stairs and you will find this magic spot.
