Plein Air Paintings of Wetlands/Ponds

Plein Air Painting of Elkhorn Slough, California - The Story behind this Original Oil Painting

At Elkhorn Slough, it's all about the sky and water and the reflections of one into the other. At any time of the year this is one of my best plein air painting spots in Central California. The Slough is nursery to many creatures and a sanctuary for sea otters - they hang out here by the dozen - safe from the ocean swells and happy in the abundance of food. Mother sealions and seals also bring their pups into the calm waters to regroup.

I did this painting in late January in a lull between winter storms. As a keen birder I can always find interesting birds here. On this occasion we were on the lookout for a pink flamingo that had been spotted in the area by other birders. Unfortunately I did not get to see it. Lots of coots, ducks and pelican as one would expect.

Kennebec River, Bath, Maine

The Kennebec River flows through Bath, Maine on it’s way to the Atlantic at Popham Beach. I’ve painted this view of the river bank many times from our little cottage on Washington Street in Bath. This is the view we have from our sun room. The window studded room looks directly East across the marshy banks of the Kennebec to Arrowsic Island on the other side of the river.

Ospreys nest here every year. This summer we watched an Osprey pair successfully raise two chicks – the chicks fledged and flew while we were there. The Kennebec River is a happy hunting ground for the ospreys and many other birds and animals. Fishing is good these days, with trophy sized stripped bass and sturgeon regularly caught by fishermen along this stretch of the river. Salmon also come up this river to spawn. This painting was done at high tide in July, when the marsh comes alive with blowing grasses and sky reflections.
